How to analyze keywords search trends successfully

Google trends

In this article you will find out ways of analyzing keyword trends and you will also see the folly of analyzing keyword trends too. You may also see how it is a bit of a minefield, although most of the SEO business is minefield if you are in the unfortunate position of paying others for SEO services. It is very easy to get burned when it comes to SEO. You will also see that a lot of the keyword trending information that you need is actually available due to your own website analytics. After all, if you want to know how trends affect your own website, then your own analytics will tell you the most accurate personal-website trends.

Learn that people don’t want you to know keyword trends

There is a lot of information about it on the Internet, but this sort of information may be valuable if used correctly, which means that someone somewhere is going to hold a monopoly over it. There are people out there who do not want you to know the real keyword trends and so are going to provide you with false ones. Make sure you think about that when looking up your keyword search trends.

Companies would love to charge you for this information

As long as there is valuable information out there, there will always be people wanting you to pay for it. It is up to you if you do pay for it, but remember that it should be worth the money. If you are paying for information that you are not converting in to more sales and lots more traffic, then you are wasting your time and money.

Know that trends are meaningless in all walks of life

People on the stock market use trends to judge the health and risk of a company, but if that really worked then all the market crashes and dips would have been predicted and nobody would lose money on the stock market. Trends do not have as much value as people truly think they do. Read a book called “The Black Swan” by Nassim Taleb and you will see how random the world really is. He gives an example about how a turkey is fed more and more until the day before thanks giving, where the turkey is killed. If you look at the trend, then the turkey’s life was getting better and better--until it ended.

Optimize for words yourself and check your own analytics

If you really want inside information to the trends relating to your website specifically, then check your own analytic metrics. They are about as close to home as your trends are ever going to get. Stop relying on others to process your trend information and do it yourself.

Finding out what your target consumer is typing in now is more important

This is more important than trends because it shows you what keywords actually matter. You can see a trend that shows an increasing interest in a keyword, but if that keyword is never used by your target consumer then what is the point of it?

Finding new markets means abandoning old ones

Do not fall for the “big talk” about keyword analysis and using it to find new markets. New markets means you simply abandon your old ones. It does not mean tapping into yet another gold mine, it means leaving your old gold mine with the hopes that the new one has more gold in it.

Check for conversion trends with your own data

Conversions are just as important as keyword traffic; in fact they are more important because they tell you if your traffic is worth all the fuss. If most of your traffic is converting then you are doing something very right.

Trends involving your competitors are important but may not be relevant

The keyword analysis relating to your competitors may be important because they are taking what could potentially be your traffic and your customers. But, it is all relative to the type of campaigns you are both running. They may simply be picking up your slack as oppose to directly robbing you of traffic.

Try google.co.uk/trends/

This is the Google tool that tells you about keyword trends. It is not great if you want specific numbers, but it should give you an idea as to what is a very popular keyword or key-phrase. You can use the tool to figure out if your new keywords are worth looking in to, but many people find it difficult to work with because it does not give specific information that allows a person to judge accurately if one keyword is more popular than another.
